Cottages from Mudlen End Studio were sold wholesale in cartons of 60. The origins of this stems from them being packed into discarded cardboard cartons collected from the local brewery, saving them from destruction. The boxes were used for bottles of alcohol and hence had 12 compartments. Cottages were wrapped in newspaper and pushed down into the compartments. They fitted very snugly and were well protected. The boxes held 5 each of 12 different models. The boxes were wrapped in brown paper, taped up, then bound with string for easier handling. Many of the customers, especially from the United States, used to comment on how much they enjoyed receiving a delivery, not only for the excitement of unwrapping the actual cottages to see what they had got, but also reading the newspapers and getting an insight into another world through the reports, adverts etc.
